Exploring New Territory

I was swinging through Nashville this week and had to hit up Martin’s BBQ. Their ribs are championship level.

We were seated by the railing on a raised part of the dining hall.

I watched a guy walk out of the bar and across the dining room. I knew right away; he was Australian and pointed it out to my family.

When you know what to look for, you can spot it a mile away. One of these things is not like the others. You can tell it doesn’t belong.

He walked towards our area, came up the stairs to the landing, and sat in the empty seat right next to me.

Once he started talking, fair dinkum, old mate was True Blue. Dinky Di.

We struck up a conversation and talked about our lives and where we had both worked in Australia.

We talked about traveling around America, driving the interstates, how much food you get at restaurants and flight cancelations at DFW due to weather.

He said he just had to go to Walmart, to see what it was all about. The place was so big he said he needed a GPS to find his way around! But without the GPS, he had to ask a store associate for help.

[Old Mate] “Where are your toilets?”

[Store Associate] “Sorry, Sir, we don’t sell toilets.”

[OM] “I need to use a toilet.”

[SA] “Sorry, we don’t sell toilets here.”

[OM] “I don’t want to buy one. I need to go to the toilet.”

[SA] “Oh! Do you mean a restroom?! You should have asked me for a restroom!”

When you go exploring into uncharted territory, where it feels like you don’t belong, be aware that you may be misunderstood.

Great is our Lord and mighty in power;
    his understanding has no limit.
Psalm 147:5
