Wanting, praying for, and desiring success or something new and better comes easy as a human. Unless we are clear on the underlying motivators behind these tendencies is like driving without a steering wheel. They will determine where you end up and unless you have a handle on it, you may end up somewhere you don’t want to be.
Why do you want to succeed? Why do you want God’s favor in a particular area?
There will always be a few good and noble one. But you have to dig a bit deeper to get to the really juicy ones. The sinister ones. The things you don’t want to admit.
These things take some digging, and you may need a safe space to process them. Otherwise, you won’t even be able to see them.
We hesitate in admitting this stuff as we don’t want to acknowledge that our motives can be impure. There can be some tarnish.
But when you can acknowledge what lies beneath, there is freedom. It gives you a choice to decide what is really driving you.
For me, it is wanting to stick it to the doubters. I want success to prove to those who didn’t believe in me that I’m somebody. I want people to be surprised by how amazing I turned out to be.
The gold comes when you can play with the narrative. I don’t need to be successful for a few people to think I’m amazing. I can be a mess for the few people who matter to me, and they will still stick with me.
To me, that is way more valuable than wondering what some distant person thinks. They have probably forgotten about me anyway. So I might as well forget about what I think the thing about me.
