When we set goals for ourselves and work towards achieving them, we often lose sight of the real reason behind the goal. We lose sight of the forest for the trees.
We may have a goal of a certain amount of outbound sales contacts every day or week.
We may have a social selling strategy that requires posting videos or content regularly.
Or, as I did for myself, set a goal of publishing a blog post every week.
The good thing about setting a specific goal is that there is accountability. You either did it, or you didn’t.
The downside comes when you are just doing the activity to check off a box in hopes of feeling like you are getting stuff done.
Forgetting the larger reason why you set the goal in the first place will tax your motivation. It can lead to not doing the required activities which you know will move things forward. This is when we give in to the negative critical self-talk and throw in the towel.
This is where I am at right now with my goal as I have missed posting here a couple of weeks in a row. I will make it up to you, I promise. Don’t worry at all; I have a plan!
Remember the Why Behind the Goal
When you lose motivation towards achieving a goal, analyze your self talk on what knocked you out of the game.
Then come back to your goal and think about why you set it for yourself.
For me, the goal of writing and publishing a blog post every week has a deeper purpose. I wanted to develop a writing habit to clarify my thinking about ideas and improve my writing skills. I wanted to overcome my fear of sharing, not just my writing but also my unique take on the world. I also wanted to connect with people around the written word, tell stories of transformation, and inspire people to change.
Understanding the deeper want behind the goal brings greater clarity and size to how our activities can impact others.
When I thought more about this privilege, I figured I would bang out a post about it. And here we are!
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
Psalm 90:17
