Who the Son Sets Free

It was ten years ago this month that I went to Angola Prison and slept in one of these cells.

I was a volunteer in a leadership development program that inmates mostly put on. As I hadn’t assaulted, murdered, or robbed anyone, I felt pretty good about myself.

At the time, I only cared about selling more, being more successful, and advancing myself.

Discontent and chasing.

There was a disconnect between how I lived and these men lived.

They were present, intent on deeply connecting. Joyful and content. Honest about their shortcomings and authentic in their relationships. And deeply hopeful.

They had an intimacy with God that I could hear in their voice. A powerful connection to the Source. Which I longed for.

I’ve remained in touch with a group of these men and have made 12 trips back to visit until 2020. They inspire me deeply, and I want them to be proud of their impact on my life.

Over the years, I learned more about institutional injustice, systemic racism, and mass incarceration. Yes, these men had committed major crimes. But they were also caught up on the wrong side of the system.

Back then, there was little hope they could go home. But that is slowly changing.

Last night, one of the first Pastor’s I met walked out a free man after 30 years behind bars.

In the videos, he looked like he was walking on water. The joy he radiated in the photos was lighting up the night sky. I’m overjoyed with him.

We all have work to do, and society will be a better place with Pastor doing his work as a free man.

Who the Son sets free is free indeed.
